Why I Built It

About Me – A Girl From Annapolis

“And if I don’t make it to the spring

May you catch the joy that a melody brings

From my dear brothers ragged six string

Singing the songs we’re embarrassed to sing

May you never be embarrassed to singgirl-564464_1280

My dreams are lies

That I have tried to ignore

My dreams fly me

To a place near Baltimore”

The Avett Brothers circa 2003

This song just makes me smile. It’s mainly because I picture my parents puttering around the back yard, attending to the beautiful flowers they grow through spring into the summer months. My Dad, humming the melody under his breath, while my Mom continues it when he stops. The fresh pink and gold roses, purple-blue hydrangeas and baskets overflowing with colors of red, white and blue. “ How American!” I would yell, pretty much every summer since I can remember. “They say it’s a song about a girl from Annapolis,”…my Dad remarks while eyeing me coyly, an impish grin spreads across his lips. And I laugh every time!  Mainly because he’s corny, but there’s also some truth…this place, my city of Annapolis is the best state in the Union, my Maryland. Yes, it’s my Maryland! I love everything about living here; from the hot nightspots in Baltimore, to sailing on the cool Chesapeake Bay. From the delicious blue crabs, cracked with wooden mallets and eaten messily with reckless abandon, devoured by all those who love its sweet meat, to a simple steamed hot dog at a Baltimore Orioles baseball game.  It just doesn’t get any better than this. I’ve resided in Annapolis most of my life, and we are a career Naval family. Did you know the United States Naval Academy is right here in our capital? I love the site of walking down Main Street while the men and women in their crisp white uniforms enjoy a day to themselves. I feel safe here, and the community rallies around all its citizens. Annapolis has a small town feel, a Southern charm, an easy way of life dotted with charming colonial homes from the 17th and 18th centuries and it’s brick walkways line the narrow streets.

But of course, with old world charm comes some modern things too! Let’s face it, I’m young and I want to be close to all the action I can. When I’m feeling a little edgy and want to dance, my friends and I hop a water taxi into Baltimore and hit the clubs. When I’m feeling culturally inspired, Ihead to the many art museums all over the city. And if I feel like I need o just take it easy and feel peace, I visit the aquarium and watch the fish swim in circles for hours.  It’s the best therapy.

There are simply too many things about Maryland to list here. I hope you will allow me to be your tour guide and tell you why I love it here so much and why you must come visit! Whether you are looking for peace and quiet mixed with old world charm, or the hustle bustle of a big city or the quiet shores call your name…maybe you love history and want to know more, or you prefer cultural festivals and sporting events, we have it all.
